- McCoy wurde geboren in Dunoon auf der Cowal-Halbinsel und hatte eine irische Mutter und einen englischen Vater. Er wuchs hauptsächlich …
… in Dublin auf. In seiner Jugend wollte er Priester werden, gab dies aber auf und arbeitete für eine Versicherung. McCoy lebt derzeit in Schottland mit seiner Frau und zwei Kindern.Seine bekannteste Rolle ist des siebten Doktors in Doctor Who von 1987 bis 1989. Er spielte den Doktor 1993 in Dimensions in Time und erneut 1996 am Anfang des Fernsehfilmes Doctor Who.
1990 wurde er von den Lesern des Doctor Who Magazine zum Besten Doktor gewählt.
